The Queen’s Inn, originally constructed in 1858 as the Queen’s Arms Hotel and named in honour of Queen Victoria, has been a prominent part of Stratford’s hospitality history for over 165 years. Transitioning from a wooden structure to its current brick form, the building reflects the city’s architectural and cultural evolution.

  • As part of an extensive rehabilitation project, still in progress, Prototeck Engineering Associates Inc. are engaged to deliver comprehensive structural engineering services to preserve and enhance the safety and longevity of this heritage property. Matter Architectural Studio Inc. are the architect for the project and BMI Group are the Project Managers.

Prototeck’s work includes the evaluation and reinforcement of key structural elements such as the assessment and strengthening of floor systems—replacing deteriorated components and integrating new support where needed; the removal and replacement of compromised load-bearing walls, with new structural alternatives introduced and surrounding masonry reinforced to accommodate planned reconfigurations; the strengthening of beams and joists using steel, lumber, and engineered timber chosen to complement the building’s historic character; and the thorough documentation of existing conditions along with engineering recommendations to ensure compliance with current Ontario Building Code standards and suitability for future use.

All interventions were designed to minimize disruption to the building’s heritage fabric while meeting modern performance standards. The structural rehabilitation ensures The Queen’s Inn can continue to serve the Stratford community for generations to come.
